Tradition

The "Nosia"

The red colour symbolises life, blood and wine. In the past there was a different "Nosia" for each Bulgarian village. The Nosia are covered with hand-embroideries. Each embroidery symbolises something : the husband, the mother, the children. The embroideries show the life cycle of humans.

The Rose Valley ( Розова долина, Rozova dolina) is famous for its rose-growing industry which produces 85% of the world's rose oil. The center of the rose oil industry is Kazanlak. Each year, festivals are held celebrating roses and rose oil. The gathering process, traditionally a woman's task, requires great dexterity and patience. The flowers are carefully cut one by one and laid in willow-baskets which are then sent to the distilleries. Rose oil is used in cosmetics.

Martenichki

Every year, on March 1 we celebrate "Баба Марта" (grandmother Marta) and the upcoming spring. And the tradition is to exchange and wear hand made white and red tassels and red and white dolls called "Пижо и Пенда". They symbolize good heath, purity and life. We have to wear the "martenichki"  until the end of March, however if one sees a stork earlier, the martenichka can be taken off and hung on a tree!
